design context
the upcoming entuwrf is based on the brief of the media architecture bienalle amsterdam of 2020. it will deal with the tehma „Playful & Artistic Civic Engagement“ in the following project.
We live in a world where discrimination is a daily challenge for many people.examples of anti-discrimination movements are the #blacklivesmatter or the #LGBTQ+ movement. Especially in the current situation, while we are trying to overcome a pandemic, Asian looking people have had to face discrimination particularly hard #IAmNotAVirus. We want to address the issue of discrimination in a playful and artistic way to visualize how it feels to be excluded and neglected. Based on this idea, we created an interactive space. By asking questions to express ourselves, we create a starting point that we cannot change and that is often the reason why people are discriminated against. Our main goal is to overcome the global social problem of exclusion and solve it through integration, eventually achieving full inclusion. By visualizing the exclusion in our communication spaces. we try to create a platform where people can exchange ideas to avoid misunderstandings and prejudices, the main reason for discrimination.

design concept
Social Painting - embrace the difference - a game for everyone to overcome social prejudices and discrimination in a playful and artistic way. The interactive media installation offers a platform for communication and information between people of all kinds to bring them closer together. Social Painting is an age-appropriate game with simple rules, for everyone. The interactive installation is not only interesting for the participants, but also involves the spectators by changing the colors of the paths with tablets. To create more exchange and a better future for society - hop on the playing field and start moving. Don‘t think black and white, play with color - appreciate diversity.

> „How long is your hair?“
> „What hair color do you have?“
2. Possible answers
> „What eye color do you have?“
3. Answer
> „What eye color do you have?“
4. Geometries
> MINORITY gets a different shape
> MINORITY - Square5. Creating the DIGITAL PAINTING
> shapes are starting to move
GEOMETRY BASICS
VARIETY OF GEOMETRIES
> Visualization of different starting points
> Different shapes – different abilities
> Geometries are based on the answer the participants have given
1. CIRCLES – move in any direction
2. SQUARE – moves only in 2 directions
3. SQUARE – with docking option
> able to move in all directions as well
> Symbolizes:
> together we can change> not excluded anymore
> creating communication space

We use two shapes to distinguish between different appearances of the players. The majority is assigned a „circle“ that can draw in any direction and the colors of the walkways could be freely changed by the tablets of the spectators. The minority is assigned a „gray square“ that can only draw back and forth in one direction. Through social painting, we bring people together and encourage them to interact with each other. This can help overcome social prejudices and give them the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas with strangers. The interaction between a neglected square and a circle is supported by a positive sound effect to give people another simple reason to reach the goal of togetherness. The sidewalk turns into „emojis“ after a successful connection and the square and circle can move together in all directions.

to create an interactive projection space, we used Kinects as sensors to collect distance data. The processing is the communication and blob detection software. Through the OSC communication system, the visitors‘ location data was transmitted to the TouchDesigner program, which converts the post effect into different colors and shapes, and also allows other tablets located in the same wifi address to change the colors remotely. We used common event truss elements for the base structure and mirror mounts. A base structure made of the various truss elements measuring 18.5m x 21.5m includes an interior grid, approximately 3m x 3m. The base is suspended from the surrounding supports with 6 steel cables, which also serve as bracing. Below the structure, the 21 x 24m mirrors are installed. 63 mirrors consist of a 3m x 3m aluminum frame covered with prefabricated mirror film.Item description
